Superstar budgies strutting their stuff

In this series of mini oil paintings, I endeavour to paint the many characters of budgies to capture their cheekyness and slightly crazy personalities.

First I collect many images of these cheeky birds looking for the ones that make me smile, its like I can see by their expressions what they are thinking, always naughty, I like the naughty ones.

I then size the image to suit the canvas and transfer.  Firstly I will paint the face with detailed brushwork. I look to capture the expression that has caught my interest in the first place.  Then I use the palette knife and lots of oil paint to create the textured chest of the bird.

These paintings are whimsical and fun just like the birds themselves a reminder to me to  lighten up, to be playful and cheeky
