Sometimes the best place to start is with absolutely no idea where you’re going.
That’s often how my abstract paintings begin. No sketch, no carefully planned composition and no picture in my head of what the finished painting should look like.
I simply start.
One palette knife mark leads to another. Colours meet, shapes appear, things get covered up and something completely unexpected takes their place. Eventually the painting begins to take on a life of its own — and my job is simply to know when to stop.
The Ballet Dancer is one of those paintings.
You might see something in it that I never intended. In fact, I hope you do. There are no right or wrong answers — just colour, texture and a completely original painting that will never happen in quite the same way again.
